What’s a Relative Decision?

What’s a Relative Decision?

  • Relative decisions refers to the way we process information based on the factors available to us at the moment we are making that choice.

The concept of relative decision making ties into the home buying process because prospective homeowners must make a relative decision when choosing what properties they like. At any given moment, you are just working with as much information as you have, and you have to realize new homes constantly go on the market or get purchased, so the inventory will constantly be evolving. It’s reasonable to continue searching if you aren’t seeing any homes you like, but you must recognize you will be waiting forever if you keep holding out for the perfect home to go for sale.

While online real estate marketplaces allow you to conduct your research in a smart manner and filter by certain characters and home styles you like, there still is nothing that compares to physically touring a home to get a real sense for it.

You might think a home looks perfect on paper and in the photos online, but when you actually step through the front door to tour it, you don’t get that same good feeling about it. You want to be excited about any new home you are buying, so if you aren’t getting a good feeling about it from your first tour, it’s probably not the home for you.

While you can certainly make some decisions about your preferences just by looking at homes online, you absolutely should visit them in-person to conduct a thorough comparison. Especially in a scenario where you are struggling to compare two properties, an in-person visit will quickly help you pinpoint what you prefer and give you an instinctual feeling about which home you like more.
