No matter your age, you are never too old to keep learning! The summer season is an opportunity to slow down, relax, and spend more time doing what you love. It’s also the warmest time of year in Phoenix, which makes it the perfect season to stay in the AC and sign up for a class! Not only will you be learning something, but it helps both kids and adults to stay on a regular routine and schedule. We have outlined a few of the summer camps and classes being offered in the Valley this year to get you excited about local opportunities for you and your kids.
July Beatles Camp at the School of Rock
This is your chance to learn how to play iconic Beatles hits! Taking place the week of July 18th through July 22nd, the School of Rock Scottsdale is offering a deep dive musical camp into the world of The Beatles, one of the most iconic bands of our time. The five day camp runs from 9 am to 3 pm each day and costs $500, and offers students an opportunity to explore the band’s musical catalog and learn about how their music has continued to influence the genre. This class is best for kids 7-18 who have prior musical experience, and campers are expected to bring their own lunch and water each day.
The camp will conclude on Friday with a live performance from students of hits from The Beatles. If you aren’t available that week, School of Rock Scottsdale is also offering a Best of the 90’s camp the following week in July. The School of Rock offers different lessons and camp curriculums for everyone from preschoolers to adults, so check back on their website for an opportunity that excites you!
Seth Korey Tennis Camps
Tennis is a great sport to learn for anyone who lives in the Valley, as there is no shortage of public courts around town and it’s a great way to stay active, meet people, and enjoy the sunshine in Phoenix. Tennis is also a sport that you can learn how to play at any age. Whether you’ve played your whole life or decide you want to improve your game as an adult, there is always potential to do so!
The Seth Korey tennis program offers an opportunity for those of all ages to take lessons or play in clinics. For adults who work during the day, they are offering a great summer evening program at The McCormick Scottsdale, centrally located on Scottsdale Road. It costs $35 per drop in class, and they also offer monthly rates. For $250 a month you can take 2 classes a week and for $350 you can take 3 classes a week, every week of the summer Monday-Thursday night until August 31st. These clinics are open to those of all levels, and it’s a great way to hone in on what areas of your tennis game need improvement.
There are also junior clinics available for kids 8-18 for kids of all skill levels. As part of these tennis camps your kids will play games, do tennis drills, and have lunch with other campers. Each Friday there is an off site field trip, with activities like ice skating, Cracker Jax, or a private movie viewing. Your kids can sign up for the junior summer camp clinic as many weeks of the summer as they want to participate! They even offer tennis camp after care from 1-4 pm for parents who work, for an additional $125 a week.
Arizona Cowboy College
Have you ever wanted to leave your life behind and be a cowboy? You can bring that dream to life with Arizona Cowboy College, a family owned business in Scottsdale that allows you to learn the skills needed to work on a ranch, including horsemanship skills, ranching techniques, and riding lessons. No matter your age, there’s an opportunity to take part in Arizona Cowboy College.
For adults, group or private lessons are offered weekly, and lessons include a broad range of horse riding skills including riding English and Western style, jumping, and a taste of trail riding as well. For kids, they offer Buckaroo Summer Horse Camp, where kids learn different riding styles, how to take care of livestock, and various training techniques. This is a great camp for any kids who have ever asked for a horse, as they will really get a close look at the level of care that goes into the care and keeping of equine animals!
Fast Break Youth Basketball League
Your kids can use the summer months to hone their basketball skills so that they are ready for the competition season during the school year. Fast Break Youth Basketball League offers four sessions of skills camps throughout the summer to fit your schedule.. Session D still has availability from August 1-4, and it costs $315 including lunch each day to attend. During the program students will learn both offensive and defensive basketball drills, all intended to help with conditioning and improve technical basketball skills. This camp will take place from 8:30 am to 3 pm each day at Victorium in Scottsdale, and is open to anyone ages 6-13. Kids will be split into groups depending on their age and skill level!
Becoming a Coding Master
Another valuable skill to get your family interested in early is the world of coding and anything STEM related! Code Ninjas in Scottsdale offers a variety of camps that help kids learn how to code. This is a national organization that has locations across the US and Canada, including one in Scottsdale. At this camp, kids learn how to code by working on innovative projects that will captivate their attention. The classes teach problem solving, critical thinking, and STEM skills all while your kids are having a ton of fun working on topics that are relatable to their interests!
This summer, Code Ninjas is offering several different camps available during the month of July. Your kids can sign up for Next Level Roblox Development the week of July 11th-July 15th, where they will learn how to write scripts in Lua, or they can participate in Code Your Own Robot in Minecraft, a camp that takes place from July 18th- July 22nd. These camps are offered for kids 8-15, and take place from 8:30 am to 3 pm each day. Your kids will return to school way ahead of their peers with this advanced STEM knowledge!
If you are interested in coding as an adult, check out your local Arizona public library system. Many of the local libraries offer free curriculum on a monthly basis geared towards adults who want to learn more about technology and STEM as well.
Summer is the best season to explore something you are passionate about, whether that is learning a new language, becoming better at a sport, or just meeting new people in the community through a shared common interest! In a few short months you can walk away with a great new hobby or skill set.
