Located less than ten miles northwest of downtown Phoenix, Glendale was originally founded as a temperance colony in 1891, though many more diverse settlers soon followed. Glendale lies between Phoenix and Peoria, both of which it is connected to by the Valley of the Sun’s notable Grand Avenue, a throughway that cuts across the area’s otherwise well-organized blocks on a bias.
Downtown Glendale is a wellspring of activity for lovers of family activities and nightlife alike. Each year, more than one and a half million lights brighten downtown Glendale for Glendale Glitters, the biggest free holiday lights display in all of Arizona. In February, nearly forty chocolatiers join Arizona’s Cerreta Candy Company for the Glendale Chocolate Affaire. Locals and visitors enjoy the Folk and Heritage Festival in March, and also catch Cactus League games operated by Glendale in Phoenix for the LA Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox. If sports are a big draw, you won’t want to miss the Glendale Sports & Entertainment District, featuring the State Farm Stadium (home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals) and Gila River Arena (where the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes ice up).
Glendale is also home to schools operated by ten different districts, including several charter and private schools. For higher education options, check out one of Glendale Community College’s two campuses, Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management, and ASU West, along with Midwestern University Medical School.
